Public meeting on Lackawaxen River Corridor Trail feasibility study

HAWLEY, PA — Federal, state and local partners gathered at Industrial Point, where the Dyberry Creek meets the Lackawaxen River in Honesdale, May 23 to mark the next phase in the development of the Lackawaxen River Trail. The county plans to develop a non-powered boat launch at Industrial Point, on land purchased by the county and donated by Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The second public meeting on Pike County’s grant-funded feasibility study for the trail will be held on Monday, June 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Pike County Training Center. The center is located at 135 Pike County Blvd. in Lords Valley. Questions or requests for additional information can be emailed to trails@pikepa.org or directed to Pike County assistant planning director Jessica Yoder at 570/296-3500, ext. 1382.

The trail feasibility study seeks to determine the interest in, capability to create and cost of a trail spanning approximately 14 miles from Hawley Borough along the Stourbridge Rail Line, the towpath and the Lackawaxen River to downtown Lackawaxen. The purpose of the meeting is for the consultant, Woodland Design Associates, to provide an overview of the draft study, and to address the citizen questions posed at the first public meeting held in July 2021.

Statewide recount in PA senate race

HARRISBURG, PA — Acting secretary of state Leigh M. Chapman issued notice on May 25 that she will order a statutorily required statewide recount in the May 17 Republican primary race for a U.S. Senate seat. Mehmet C. Oz and David H. McCormick, the first- and second-place finishers respectively, have vote totals within the one-half of one percent margin that triggers a mandatory recount under state law.

Delgado sworn in as lieutenant governor

ALBANY, NY — Rep. Antonio Delgado was sworn in as New York State lieutenant governor on Wednesday, May 25. “Lt. Gov. [Delgado] knows, having represented 11 counties, there are so many exquisite parts of our state that need to feel they matter. And that is why I wanted a partner who understood the entirety of the state,” said Gov. Kathy Hohcul, speaking at the swearing-in.

Delgado will be on the ballot as a candidate for lieutenant governor in the June 28 primary election, which also includes the governor’s race. A special election to fill his vacant seat in the 19th Congressional district will occur on August 23, with Pat Ryan and Marc Molinaro as Democratic and Republican candidates respectively.

Primaries for the congressional and the state senate races will also occur on August 23, following the recent finalizing of court-ordered redistricting maps. Josh Riley and Jamie Cheney are two Democrats who have declared their campaign for the 19th Congressional district. Democrat Eric Ball and incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker have announced their candidacies for the 51st Senate district, the district that will now include Sullivan County.

Mass shooting prevention measures proposed

ALBANY, NY — Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed additional action on May 25 to strengthen and close loopholes in state gun laws in the wake of a mass shooting in Uvalde, TX that claimed the lives of at least 21 people—including 19 elementary school children. Hochul is directing state police to increase visibility at schools in their patrol areas statewide. This increased presence includes check-ins at schools, to be conducted by both uniform and plainclothes members. This effort will continue through the end of the school year.

Last week, in direct response to the mass shooting that claimed 10 lives at a supermarket in Buffalo, Hochul unveiled a comprehensive package that includes executive orders establishing a new unit within the office of counterterrorism and a dedicated state police unit tasked with the prevention of domestic terrorism. It requires state police to file for an extreme-risk protection order whenever they have probable cause to believe that an individual is a threat to themselves or others. The governor is proposing new legislation to close the “other gun” loophole by revising and widening the definition of a firearm, making more guns subject to various pre-existing firearm laws.
