Preliminary results in for Sullivan County primaries

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Primary elections have concluded across New York State, with candidates being selected for November's general election in several local and statewide races.

Locally, Edwin Grund beat Scott Goodman for the Republican nomination for town supervisor in Cochecton, with Grunt taking 113 votes to Goodman's 53. They seek to replace longtime supervisor Gary Maas, who has chosen not to seek re-election; Grund currently serves on the town board, and has served as acting town supervisor since February following a bout of illness from Maas.

Challenger Kevin Esselman beat incumbent Jeffrey Daub for the Republican nomination for superintendent of highways in Cochecton, 92 votes to 68.

In Forestburgh, William Sipos has the lead over Gillian Kaiser for town supervisor, 54 votes to 47.

Peter Oberacker won the Republican nomination for the NY-19 district in the federal house of representatives with 74% of the vote, 13,567 votes to Alexander Portelli's 3,864. Oberacker currently represents the 51st district in the New York State Senate, a district that includes Sullivan County.

"Thank you to the voters who made tonight’s decisive victory possible," Oberacker said in a campaign statement following the election. "This campaign has always been about giving Upstate New York a real voice in Washington and this is first major step toward flipping this seat in November."

Portelli said he called Oberacker and congratulated him on his victory. "We aren't gonna pull it off tonight, but considering this campaign had no money, no staff, almost no volunteers, no county committees backing it, and no major big name endorsements, we are still going to get thousands of votes. That in itself is a huge achievement," Portelli said.

Assembly Member Christopher Tague won the Republican nomination in the race for Oberacker's open seat, taking 51% of the vote, earning 6,631 votes to Terry Bernardo's 5,663 votes. Tague currently represents district 102 in the assembly, and entered the senate race with Oberacker's backing. Bernardo currently serves as a Sullivan County Legislator, and served from 2009 to 2012 in the Ulster County Legislature.

Bernardo took 62% of the vote in Sullivan County, earning 1,346 votes to Tague's 722.

All results are unofficial results, recorded as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

Peter Oberacker, Alexander Portelli, Chris Tague, Terry Bernardo
