PASNAP endorses Cognetti for Congress

Posted

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP) recently endorsed Scranton mayor Paige Cognetti in the race for Pennsylvania’s 8th District against Republican Congressman Rob Bresnahan.

One reason the union is throwing its support behind Cognetti is that Congressman Bresnahan broke his promise to protect health care by voting for historic cuts to Medicaid last summer, threatening 60,000 health care jobs across the commonwealth and putting several NEPA hospitals at risk.

“With health care costs rising and threats to Medicaid escalating, the stakes for patients, hospitals and healthcare workers across northeastern Pennsylvania couldn’t be higher,” said Maureen May, RN, PASNAP president. “Frontline health care workers at Geisinger Community Medical Center and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital see every day how critical it is to protect access to care and invest in safe, quality health care. Paige Cognetti understands what’s at stake. She’s been a strong partner in the fight for safe staffing, workplace violence protections and ensuring frontline caregivers have a voice in the decisions that impact their patients and their professions. At a time when too many politicians have broken promises on protecting Medicaid, we need leadership we can trust. That’s why PASNAP is proud to endorse Paige Cognetti for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 8th District. We know she will stand with working people and be a champion for the communities we serve.”

PASNAP represents more than 11,000 frontline nurses and allied professionals across Pennsylvania, including the nurses, techs and health care professionals at Geisinger CMC in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre General. As the state’s fastest-growing union in their sector, they advocate for safe staffing ratios, universal healthcare access, and protections against workplace violence and harassment.
