Parents express fear after Liberty school stabbing

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — A grandmother to students at Liberty High School and middle school asked the legislature “why aren’t our children safe at school,” at the December 19 full board. The  concern comes on the heels of a stabbing near the high school on Buckley Street in the Village of Liberty on December 12. The School Resource Officers (SROs) at Liberty middle and high schools found a 16-year old stab victim who had entered school grounds seeking help.

“This needs to stop,” the grandmother said. “I need the town to discuss with the administrators how we are going to keep our children safe.” She also said her granddaughter has suffered from racist bullying and she has talked to the school with no avail.

Due to miscommunication from the county about a canceled meeting, Dr. Patrick Sullivan, the Liberty school district superintendent, happened to be at the legislative meeting. Addressing the comments made, he said, “I am the superintendent of Liberty Central School District. You’re always welcome to set up a meeting with me. There’s a Dignity Act, which is a law that ensures that bullying doesn’t take place in schools. If there’s any other questions that anybody has about the incident that recently happened, that we communicated about, and worked to ensure the safety, please feel free to reach out to my office.”
