I am a 99-year-old American Jewish Veteran, and in this holiday season my heart is heavy over the havoc Israel is doing in Gaza. I know that Israel had to strongly respond to the horrendous Hamas attack, but I cannot live comfortably with what has followed.
As the New Jewish narrative prayer says: Not in my name. Not in my name the killing and starving of innocent children. Not in my name the bombing of an entire city back to the stone age. Not in my name the eternal occupation. Not in my name the unfettered settler killings of Palestinians in the West Bank. Not in my name the shredding of Israel's own democracy.
And in my name—I want a secure, just and peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians, as I want the same for our own democracy, now threatened and under attack.
The path Israel is on will not bring safety, only endless bloodshed. We must find another way - one that honors life, dignity, and peace.
