LIBERTY — On May 12th at approximately 9:17 a.m. Officers from the Village of Liberty Police Department were dispatched to the Knights Inn Motel 2067 State Route 55 for a stabbing.
Officers arrived 3 minutes later and upon arriving they located a victim suffering from 2 stab wounds and a significant laceration to his arm. Officers immediately administered first aid and the victim was transported by EMS to State Police Liberty where he was airlifted by helicopter to West Chester Medical.
Officers conducted an investigation and were able to identify a suspect after reviewing security footage. At approximately 9:45 they located the suspect at another room in the knights Inn. He was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect, Everrod Mais 29 was charged with Criminal Possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree and Assault in the 2nd degree, both class D felonies.
He was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court in front of the Honorable Judge Johnstone who remanded Mais to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of 300,000 Cash 900,000 bond and 2.5 Million partially secured.
Chief of Police D’Agata stated, “Our officers are committed and dedicated to the safety of everyone in the Village of Liberty. They responded to this incident within three minutes, immediately rendered potentially life-saving aid, identified the suspect, and took him into custody within 30 minutes. This type of response and dedication is what our officers do every day. While we will continue to patrol, respond to and investigate incidents like these, keeping our community safe will require coordination of all levels of government.
"Simply put, the current status quo of utilizing motels to serve our unhoused population is unsafe, unsustainable, and unfair to all involved. This problem will not go away on its own, and immediate and meaningful changes are needed.”
Criminal charges are merely allegations that a defendant has committed violations of the criminal law, and as such they are not evidence of guilt. All defendants have a presumption of innocence and are entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the burden of the State of New York to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
