Keeping up with Kia

Happy and healthy New Year from everyone here at the farm. The animals are excited to have some warmer weather and the ability to roam in the pasture while they can.

When the cold comes back, everyone will be very prepared to stay warm and fed.

Many of the farm animals have been introduced. They all have their special traits and quirks about them. It has been such a great experience!

One girl we have not been able to introduce yet, though, is Kia.

Meet Kia, an 11-year-old spicy, spunky cocker spaniel. She has the endurance of a puppy, and some people even confuse her with one.

Kia was adopted a little over a year ago, because the owner was unable to take her to their new residence. At the time, we were not necessarily looking into owning or adopting a dog, particularly a senior dog. However, after taking Kia for a few days, we fell in love. Kia opened up right away, wanting all snuggles and belly rubs.

She fit right in with all of the animals, since she had been on a farm before, and was great with chickens, never trying to harm them. She would guard them and sunbathe during the day next to the girls. When we were raising chicks, she would whine until she could see them, and see that they were OK. Then she gave them lots of kisses.

Even though she doesn’t mind the goats and donkey, she still tends to keep a distance between them when outside. It may be because she accidentally shocked herself with the electric fence once before!

Kia has definitely opened our eyes to the possibility of adopting another dog in the future, and that it could be a senior dog. In a very short amount of time, Kia was able to completely change our minds about what senior dogs can be like and what a joy owning one is.
