Jackie Baker of Susquehanna County officially launched her campaign, Jackie Baker for PA.
Baker is running for Pennsylvania’s State Senate District 20. The district comprises Susquehanna County, Wyoming County, Pike County, most of Wayne County and the northern portion of Luzerne County. Baker met the requirements to secure a place on the ballot for the primary election on May 19. She is running unopposed on the Democratic ticket.
“I am running for state senator because I believe that no matter what rural community, town or city we live in, we all deserve to thrive and prosper. We know that the cost of groceries, gas, electricity, rent and everything in between continues to rise at an extraordinary rate. Costs are not going down for individuals, families or small businesses here in Pennsylvania, and a serious lack of affordable and accessible health care is devastating people in our district. It’s time for a change. We all deserve better, and that’s why I’m asking for the support of the voters in State Senate District 20 this year,” said Baker.
“Over 70 percent of the largest corporations operating in Pennsylvania pay nothing in state taxes. Without a fair tax on these large corporations, the state doesn’t have enough money to pay for education, infrastructure, public transit, child care, health care and other services that people and local communities need,” said Baker. “This means that it’s time to demand that ultra-rich Pennsylvanians and multinational corporations pay their fair share so we can make life more affordable for all of us.”
Baker was born and raised in Northeast PA. She is a graduate of Elk Lake School District in Dimock, PA. She graduated from Mansfield University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and earned her master’s degree in education from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
As a public school teacher and mother, Baker has always advocated for children and families and has stood by the principle that all people deserve to be treated with fairness and dignity. Baker, her husband and sons raise pigs and grow vegetables at their small homestead in Susquehanna County.
