Autumn bog walk at Long Swamp
Saturday, September 26, 10 a.m. to noon
“Join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy for a glimpse into an ancient landscape on a guided walk into Long Swamp at Camp Speers YMCA. Formed more than 10,000 years ago as glaciers retreated, Long Swamp is a rare peatland ecosystem that supports a variety of ericaceous (acid-loving) shrubs, including leatherleaf, early azalea and huckleberry. September is one of the best times to explore Long Swamp.”
“Many of the ericaceous shrubs still retain their varied fruits, the different types of sedges in the bog have all flowered, and there are subtle foliage changes in both the shrubs and trees that offer a unique opportunity to observe and learn to identify these plants in a location forever protected through efforts of Camp Speers YMCA, Delaware Highlands Conservancy and public support. This event is free, but advance registration is requested.”
