MONTICELLO, NY — On Monday, August 31, the Sullivan County community will join together to raise awareness about overdoses and reduce the stigma surrounding drug-related deaths.

The annual International Overdose Awareness Day Vigil will take place that day starting at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Sullivan County Courthouse, 414 Broadway. Local first responders, musicians and community members will gather in front of the courthouse, which will be illuminated in purple to symbolize overdose awareness.

State and local leaders will talk about what is being done to battle the opioid crisis in the community. “Open your hearts as families share their stories of loved ones who lost their battle with substance use,” organizers said. “Remember those who have passed and celebrate those in recovery. Meet organizations and learn about resources created to face this crisis head-on.”

The gathering is produced by organizations working together to end the opioid epidemic in Sullivan County.
