On April 15, 95 students (nearly double last year’s attendance) and teachers from high schools across Pike and Wayne counties joined two conservation districts for a full day of fun, competition and science education at the 38th Pike/Wayne Envirothon.
Teams representing Delaware Valley High School, Honesdale High School, Wallenpaupack Area High School and Western Wayne High School participated. The winning team was the River-lutionaries from Delaware Valley High School.
An annual competition, Envirothon challenges students in aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, soils and land use, and “Roots and Resiliency: Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change.”
Students spend many weeks preparing for the competition.
The Pike County Conservation District (PCCD) and Wayne Conservation District (WCD) and their partners work to instill a lifelong passion for environmental science in students.
The competition and its study packets are curated by leaders in their fields. Federal, state and local partners include the PA Fish & Boat Commission, PA Game Commission, PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, PA Department of Environmental Protection, PA Department of Agriculture, PA Department of Education, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the State Conservation Commission, Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, PA Envirothon, Lake Wallenpaupack Management District, Delaware Highlands Conservancy and the Pike County Planning & Mapping Office.
Wayne County’s highest-scoring team, the BrINClHOF Boys from Western Wayne High School, will travel with the Delaware Valley team to the Pennsylvania Envirothon.
The two conservation districts thanked the 2025 sponsors who funded this event.
