Flash flood warning issued for Northwestern Sullivan County, East-Central Wayne County

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER, NY & PA — On Tuesday, July 28, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton issued a flash flood warning for Northwestern Sullivan County, NY, and East-Central Wayne County, PA. The warning lasted until 5:30 p.m., as originally noticed. 

At 2:30 p.m., the NWS said, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between one and two inches of rain has fallen. The expected rainfall rate is one to two inches in one hour. Flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly. 

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include: Honesdale, Damascus, Callicoon, Cochecton, Prompton, Bethany, Hortonville, Hankins, Rutledgedale, Stalker, Roscoe, Hazel, Rockland, Fremont, Abrahamsville, North Branch, Calkins, Rileyville and Beach Lake.

Precautionary / preparedness actions included: 

  • Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely.
