Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties steps up to fight hunger

REGION — Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties (HOSC) announced the completion of the “Hearts That Heal, Hands That Feed” food drive. "What began as a simple collection effort grew into a movement of gratitude, unity and profound community love," a staff member said.

The food drive, now officially concluded, was created to support local families facing food insecurity during the holiday season and became one of "the most heartfelt efforts in the organization’s recent history," HOSC said.

"For decades, the community has poured its love, generosity and trust into Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties. Families across Orange and Sullivan Counties have stood beside HOSC, strengthening its mission and allowing the organization to care for their loved ones during the most vulnerable chapters of life. This year, hospice staff felt a deep calling to give that love back."

“Our team didn’t just organize a food drive,” said Eric Gatsik, president/CEO. “They poured their hearts and souls into it. They gave back with the same compassion and humanity they bring to every patient and family we serve.”

The response was overwhelming. Boxes overflowed at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, the Middletown Hub and the administration building, filled by staff who gave generously and without hesitation. And in the spirit of giving back to the communities who have always carried HOSC, donations were delivered to: • Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne (Sullivan County)

• Catholic Charities in Monticello (Sullivan County) • Catholic Charities in Newburgh (Orange County) • Deacon Jack Seymour Food Pantry in Newburgh (Orange County)

"Because of the extraordinary generosity of our staff, we were able to assemble 100 complete, dignified meals," HOSC said. "One hundred tables will not go empty, and one hundred families will feel seen, supported and cared for this season."

Meals will be delivered through all four locations to ensure that hope reaches the homes that need it most.

“This effort reminded us that hospice is more than care. It is humanity. What began as a simple idea quickly grew into something beautiful,” said members of the Hearts at Work committee. “It is about lifting each other up. Our staff didn’t just donate food. They donated compassion, dignity, and hope. The community shows up for us every single day, and this month, we had the honor of showing up for them. This was more than a project. It was a promise to give back to the same community that has strengthened us for over 35 years.”

With the food drive now complete, HOSC hopes the impact will be felt long after the holidays in full plates, warm homes and families who know their community cares.
