Family sues short-term rental over drowning deaths

WHITE LAKE, NY — A family that lost three of its members last year at a Sullivan County Airbnb is suing the platform and the rental’s owners.

Afrid Haider, 34, drowned in White Lake on August 28, 2022. The family says he slipped off a steep drop-off on the lake floor about which there was no warning. His wife’s brother and sister, Basir Amin, 18, and Nasrin Amin, 21, went to his aid. Basir died at the scene, while Nasrin fell into a coma and died a week later.

Rahul and Rahala Amin, the parents of Basir and Nasrin; Faruque Amin, their brother; and Nahima Amin, their sister and Haider’s wife, are now suing Airbnb and the owners of the vacation home where they were staying.

The suit, filed August 15 in Queens County Supreme Court, says the plaintiffs neglected to take the safety precautions that would have spared their loved ones.

Named as plaintiffs in the suit are At the Lake, LLC, a New York company; Evolve Vacation Rental Network, Inc., Airbnb Trravel, LLC, Airbnb Payments, all out-of-state companies; and two individuals, Antonio Fernandez and Angel Rojas.

Daniel Linson of Gersowitz Libo & Korek, PC, is representing the Amin family.
