FALLSBURG, NY — Thirty-nine years have passed since the Fallsburg Central School District retirees met for breakfast on the first day of the school year. This annual tradition is a moment for acknowledging each other for the years spent together in the classrooms and offices of Benjamin Cosor Elementary School and Fallsburg Junior and Senior High School.
Many of the founding members of that first breakfast are no longer with us, but their grateful colleagues keep their spirits alive in their hearts and in their memories. Host Robin Pantel welcomed the 24 retirees in attendance at the Liberty Diner.
There were moments of silence to recognize those who passed during the last year: Arlene Hussey, Richard Steiglitz, Leo Cecil, Maryanne Bartolomeo and Ronald Kates (husband of Renee).
Robin requested that retirees share “good news” so she can keep the retirees informed via email and thus preserve the Fallsburg Family connection.
Thus began a discussion of uplifting news. Eileen Kalter spoke about her talks with Ceil Cohen, who just celebrated her 96th birthday; Steve Tollen sent an email and shared his thanks to Jay Kasofsky for his love of crosswords and Rich Topper for his knowledge of the computer; Joan Kasofsky also emailed. She is actively painting and exhibiting her works at art shows in Texas. Others shared their pride regarding their children’s accomplishments.
A good time was had by all, sharing and reminiscing. Everyone looks forward to next year’s get-together.
