Dolly Parton dies; Sullivan County mourns, highlights ties

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — On Tuesday, August 25, it was announced that country music star Dolly Parton passed away, at the age of 80.  Dubbed the "Queen of Country," Parton was among the best-selling music artists of all time, also engaging in significant and sustained philanthropy with the Dollywood Foundation.

Statements from Parton's representatives highlighted that Parton "died peacefully" on August 25, and that she had passed away following a brief battle with cancer, according to published reports.

In a post on Wednesday, August 26, the Sullivan County Government recognized Parton's death, and highlighted her brief ties to the Sullivan County region.

"The county shares in the national grief over the passing of Dolly Parton, but we also are grateful and proud of her association with our region over the years, from performing at SUNY Sullivan more than 50 years ago to her music video for "Travelin' Thru," part of the soundtrack of the 2005 film "Transamerica." Much of the movie was shot in Sullivan County (including Callicoon and Hortonville), and Parton's video incorporates footage from Route 17B in White Lake and Bethel, and Crystal Lake Wild Forest near Fremont Center," reads the statement.
