I am a Jewish American Democrat who believes the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is making a grave mistake in its passive stance via the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a powerful Netanyahu-supporting lobbying organization. Having rejected efforts to oppose AIPAC’s enormous financial investments in Democratic primaries, party leaders are ignoring a rapidly shifting public mood.
Growing numbers—including younger voters and a majority of Jewish Americans—are increasingly uncomfortable with unconditional support for Israel’s current policies, which AIPAC fully endorses. Voters are watching Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon with mounting distress.
If the DNC continues to dismiss these concerns, it risks alienating a critical segment, not just of its base, but of the electorate at large. That would represent both a moral and political failure. Heading into the midterm elections, failure to curb AIPAC could cost Democrats both enthusiasm and votes in the fight to block Trump in his desperate last two years.
