LIBERTY, NY — Did you know that Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a nationally recognized event where the public can safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications at thousands of local collection sites nationwide to prevent misuse and accidental poisoning?
Earlier this year, the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Sullivan and Sullivan Allies Leading Together (SALT) Prevention Team partnered with local youth and the Liberty Police Department to collect and dispose of unused and expired prescription medications from the local community.
This event is just one part of a major effort to reduce the amount of drug use and overdoses recorded in Sullivan County. The team visited the residents of Liberty Commons and Chestnut Street Apartments and, in total, collected 47 pounds of medications.
“It is really neat having our youthful neighbors being part of the solution regarding Sullivan County Health,” said Martin Colavito, prevention program issue leader.
The CCE Sullivan Prevention Team takes a proactive approach to preventing substance abuse by offering evidence-based programs that build confidence and empower youth and adults with skills to make decisions that better their lives. To learn more about this and other Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County programs, call 845/292-6180, email sullivan@cornell.edu or visit www.sullivancce.org.
Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County provides equal program and employment opportunities. The public can contact the office to request accommodations.
