Daniel Edward Wescott of Equinunk, PA, died Sunday, July 5 at Wayne Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. He was born in North Adams, MA to Fannie Whitney Wescott and William Wescott. Dan’s mother passed away when he was 14 years of age, after which he was raised by his maternal aunt, Harriett Whitney.
He was an electronics engineer with the Perkin Elmer Corporation in Norwalk, CT, where he worked for several decades on the Hubble Space Telescope and its predecessor, Stratoscope II. He was also a pilot for Tiburzi Airlines in Danbury, CT during that period. Dan was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served two tours of duty in the Korean War in the early 1950s. When he returned from Korea, he and his brother, Hank Wescott, opened a Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership in Chicopee, MA.
He married Linda Girotti of Agawam, MA in September, 1960. They moved to Danbury, where they raised their three sons, Steven, Kenneth and Lawrence. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in September.
Dan is survived by his wife Linda, his son Steven and daughter-in-law Karen, and their sons Raymond (Kate) and Colin (Tasia) and their three sons. Dan’s son Larry resides in Torrington, CT and is the father of four: Xavier, Logan, Aurora and Remington. Dan was predeceased by his son Kenneth.
The family were members of St. Joseph Church in Rileyville, PA, and he was a member of the Melha Shrine, the Joel Hill Sawmill’s “Brotherhood of the Mill,” and the Pine Mill Community Hall, and assisted as needed at the Manchester Community Library.
Dan and Linda were avid square dancers for many years. Their club danced yearly at Cherry Ridge Campground, where they became acquainted with Honesdale, PA and made the decision to retire to this area in later years.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hessling Murray Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 8 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 2270 Hancock Hwy., Rileyville, PA. Interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery in West Springfield, MA. Contributions in Dan’s memory can be sent to Melha Shriners, 89 Park St., Chicopee, MA 01013 or to the charity of one’s choice.
