Creating a market

Posted

Someone recently told me, when complaining about the overreach of federal mandates, most specifically phasing out gas stoves in new construction among other ideas, that these types of changes ought to be left up to the markets.

"Someone has an idea for a concept or a product that's irresistible; that's how these sorts of changes need to be implemented. It's the markets."

I countered that sometimes ideas which serve the common good, like seatbelts, often need to be regulated by a higher authority. There are actions we take based on what's best for the common good.

"You remember how many people complained that no one could tell them what to do, including wearing a seatbelt?" I asked.

They agreed. Some ideas were worth implementing, even as they are not initially endorsed by the masses.

Which is why I chose this quote by Biblical scholar and theologian Rev. Dr. Walter Wink. In it, Wink acknowledges that we can embrace the hope of something new and bring it to fruition by making it irresistible.

It brings to mind babies, kittens, puppies, and the newborn of all species. New beginnings and the emergence of hope are made irresistible in every moment.

Especially on a gorgeous spring day.
