I recently read the Politico article detailing Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti’s dealings with Fidelity Bank, and the situation raises deeply troubling questions. The city’s approval of a purchase involving the bank, followed shortly after by donations to the mayor’s congressional campaign from members of the bank’s board, including her husband’s uncle, creates the appearance of pay-to-play politics, if not outright exposes it.
Even if everything was technically legal, the optics alone should concern anyone who cares about semi-ethical government. Public officials have a responsibility not only to follow the letter of the law but also to avoid situations that erode public trust.
Northeastern Pennsylvania has struggled with political corruption for decades. Residents across the region are tired of headlines that make us question whether decisions are being made in the public’s interest or for political benefit.
Cognetti owes the public a full and clear explanation. If she cannot provide one that restores confidence, she should withdraw from the congressional race and resign as mayor. Our region deserves leadership that is beyond reproach. Enough is enough.
