Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 2024 injuries, illnesses

NEW YORK — Private industry employers reported 122,400 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in New York in 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The resulting incidence rate was 1.9 cases per 100 full-time equivalent workers, compared to 2.1 a year prior. In 2024, the national incidence rate was 2.3.

Among the highlights from today’s release:

  • New York’s private industry incidence rates ranged from 0.4 in financial activities to 2.8 in trade, transportation, and utilities.
  • 71,600 incidents in the state’s private sector were of a more severe nature, resulting in days away from work, job transfer, or restriction.
  • In 2024, injuries accounted for 94% of total recordable cases in the state’s private sector.
  • New York’s state and local government sector reported 58,500 injury and illness cases, resulting in a rate of 5.7.
