Bending toward justice

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice" is a quote that was made famous by Martin Luther King, Jr. He used it to inspire action that, with human effort, the moral arc of the universe bends toward equity and fairness.

It was a sentiment that the Rev. Theodore Parker, an abolitionist and Unitarian minister, used in his 1853 sermon "Of True Religion."  In that sermon, part of a series of 10 that reflected on the role of religion and spiritual belief in everyday life, Parker advocates that true religion isn't about dogma or institutions but about conscious, lived experience of the soul's connection to something larger than ourselves. This connection, he contends, is manifested in ethical living, justice, love, and spiritual growth, rooted in human intuition and consciousness (Transcendentalism) rather than blind faith in scripture or church doctrine.

At this time of national and global upheaval, it seems appropriate to consider whether we believe that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice and how we can become an able assistant in that bending.

Quote of the Week, Martin Luther King, Jr.; Rev. Theodore Parker
