AG Letitia James supports lawsuit that claims Town of Forestburgh violated the fair housing act

A May 5 press release from New York Attorney General Letitia James says,  "James sent a letter to federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York supporting their involvement in the Lost Lake Holdings, LLC v. Town of Forestburgh  lawsuit to protect Jewish community residents who are being unfairly targeted and prevented from building houses of worship in Forestburgh."

In her letter, Attorney General James writes, “The assertion that the Town of Forestburgh denied land use applications based on the religious identity of the developers and the potential use of the property by Orthodox Jewish residents is profoundly disturbing and, if proven true, represents a clear violation of the Fair Housing Act.”  Attorney General James also writes that federal prosecutors should take action to enforce the Fair Housing Act and other federal anti-discrimination statutes. The letter is attached at left.

The release said, the letter is the latest effort by Attorney General James’ efforts to stop unfair zoning restrictions on houses of worship that target and discriminate against the Jewish community in the Hudson Valley. Last April, Attorney General James sent a letter to the Town of Forestburgh demanding that the Town review and make changes to Local Law 3 for imposing unfair zoning restrictions on houses of worship that target and discriminate against the Jewish community.
