There is an adage that every little bit helps. Small bits add up to larger bits, and soon those bits contribute to significant amounts.
As we reel daily, understanding that the way things were are not the way things are, holding onto this concept of small bits combining to affect larger change seems helpful in maintaining our own sense of agency.
This is a concept that I have always held onto when a situation seems out of my control. (This is nearly a daily experience in my now 47-year career at the River Reporter.)
I have sought solace in the concept that any action that you take that raises the positive energy of the situation is enough of an asset. This manifests in a myriad of ways: a little bit of patience in a trying situation, exhibiting a bit of flexibility when things are not going your way, and recognizing how lucky we are to live in a peaceful and beautiful landscape, to name just three.
I liken it to maintaining one's cool and rolling with the punches.
It's great to be reminded by the Rev. Desmond Tutu that practicing adding little bits of good where we are actually has a larger effect beyond our immediate environs.
