Botany meets art in ‘Pressed in Light’

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Pressed in Light,” a floral and artistic collaboration between farmer Leslie LeFranc and photographer Kaitlyn Danielson, will move to the Tusten Heritage Community Garden.
An opening will be held at the garden, located behind the Tusten-Cochecton branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library, on Saturday, October 15. The event begins at 2 p.m.
The artists recently had a show, with Catskill plants, in Barryville.
For this show, LeFranc and Danielson will take their talents and work with plants from the community garden, creating site-specific lumen prints.
There is no charge for the show.

Haunted theatre tours

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — If you enjoy a scare, you can try the Rivoli Theatre in October—it transforms itself into a haunted theatre. Three floors of frights await visitors at the Rivoli’s Haunted Theatre Tours.
Tours begin at 6 p.m.; the last tour is at 10 p.m. They take place on Friday and Saturday nights from October 14 to October 29.
The tours feature 30 actors playing different roles in different parts of the house.
The Rivoli Theatre is located at 5243 Rte. 42.

Honoring local media

LIBERTY, NY — WJFF Radio Catskill will host its community awards ceremony, an event honoring local media that connects our communities.
The awards take place on Thursday, October 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Piccolo Paese Restaurant.
The radio station will recognize the student journalists of Manor Ink, the River Reporter, the Shawangunk Journal, the Sullivan County Democrat and Bold Gold Media. Special recognition will be given to Barry Plaxen and his arts and entertainment reference guide Canvas.

Third annual ‘Live, Love, Serve’ 4-H 5K

HORTONVILLE, NY — The Small Town Country 4-H club invites the public to its third annual “Live, Love, Serve” 5K race on Sunday, October 16.
Registration and packet pick-up begin at 7 a.m., and the race begins at 9 a.m.
The 4-H club fundraiser is held on a USA track and field (USATF) certified course, on Main Street in Hortonville.
The Small Town Country 4-H describes itself as a dynamic group of local youth who are interested in agriculture, the outdoors, nature, and the arts. It encourages youth to discover all the benefits of their rural lifestyle. They are active volunteers and contribute through service to the community.
Youth must be at least eight years old to participate in the race, and people under age 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants can register as individuals or as a team, and do not have to be currently enrolled in 4-H to enter.
The cost to register is $25 for adults and $15 for 4-H members.

Open mic at the Delaware Free Library

CALLICOON, NY — The Delaware Free Library will host its Delaware Free Watershed open mic on Friday, October 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
It’s an evening of poetry and other readings. Five-minute slots are available for readings.
This month’s theme is titled “Celebrate Autumn: Passages and New Beginnings.”
Registration is required, especially if you plan on presenting. Seats and slots are limited.
The open mic is recommended for ages 12 and up.

 After Sullivan’s golden age

MONTICELLO, NY — County Historian John Conway will present a new program at the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library, looking at what happened in the county after the storied hotels closed.
“After the Fall: Life After Sullivan County’s Golden Age” will take place at 6 p.m. pm Thursday, October 13 in the library’s Robert D. Norris community room.
Conway spent much of his time as the official county historian chronicling the resort industry and its impact on the area. But what happened in the county after it ended?
He will examine and explain that time period, the proposed convention centers, and music festivals real and imagined.

Sullivan Chamber holds November 3 awards gala

CALLICOON, NY — The Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Pride of Community awards ceremony honors individuals, businesses and organizations from Sullivan County for their community involvement and their contributions to economic development.
The event, held in conjunction with the Chamber’s annual meeting, takes place on Thursday, November 3 at the Villa Roma Resort, which is located at 356 Villa Roma Rd.

Lacawac’s ninth annual 8K trail run

LAKE ARIEL, PA — The ninth annual Lake to Lake 8K Trail Run & Woods Walk takes place on Sunday, October 16. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and the race starts at 8:30 a.m.
The outdoor course winds through 550 acres of wooded nature trails and access roads, all on the grounds of Lacawac Sanctuary. No dogs or strollers are allowed on the 8K course, but both are welcome on the woods walk.
Lacawac Sanctuary is located at 94 Sanctuary Rd.
Awards will be given out for overall male and female winners, plus the top finisher in multiple age groups.

Fall hikes, photography and more

DINGMANS FERRY, PA — The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) will hold October events for the whole family.
On Saturday, October 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., participants can take a hike and discover the science behind autumn. They’ll discuss changes in animal behavior and why leaves turn color. The hike costs $5.
On Sunday, October 16 at 10 a.m., participants can learn about tent camping. They can learn everything they need to know about camping, from basic shelters to common knots, and even how to build a fire from scratch.
There is no charge for the program.
And here are some upcoming events:
If you’re interested in nature photography, take a class on Saturday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. You can learn some beginner techniques on how to frame a picture, and then practice those skills on the PEEC campus. Bring a camera, or use the camera on your phone. The class costs $5.
On Sunday, October 23, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., participants can create their own walking sticks. Wood, tools, gloves and aprons will be provided, as well as suggestions and pointers on how to personalize your work. Pre-registration is required. The program costs $30.

Raising awareness about domestic violence

MONTGOMERY, NY — Fearless! Hudson Valley will hold a 5K on Sunday, October 16. More than just a race, the event is meant to raise awareness about domestic violence and other ways the vulnerable can be harmed.
The We Can Be Heroes 5K will take place at the Orange County airport, located at 500 Dunn Rd. Also included is an interactive workshop titled “In Her Shoes” and a Clothesline Project display. All are meant to increase awareness of the impact of violence and abuse in Port Jervis, Monticello, Goshen, Middletown, Monroe and Newburgh.
Fearless! Husdon Valley, Inc. is partnering with the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), as well as other state and territorial agencies across the nation, to start a coordinated national conversation about domestic violence, according to a press release.
Key to the discussion is how all can contribute to changing the narrative on this overshadowed but fundamental topic, the group stated.
Fearless! is described as working to build an informed, just and accountable society so all people can experience supportive and safe relationships free from abuse, exploitation and oppression.
The group focuses on education, prevention and advocacy and on the importance of providing comprehensive services, including shelter, to victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, human trafficking, sexual violence and other types of crime victimization.

Arbor Day poster contest

ONLINE — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced its annual Arbor Day poster contest. The winner of the contest will have their photo or artwork reproduced as the 2023 Arbor Day poster, commemorating the holiday.
Entries must feature trees within New York State.
“Arbor Day reminds us to appreciate the immeasurable benefits trees provide to ecosystems, public health, and the fight against climate change,” said DEC commissioner Basil Seggos. “I invite all New Yorkers to highlight the beauty and importance of New York’s trees with their photography and artwork.”
The DEC will accept original photographs and artwork through Saturday, December 31.
