If Ever There Was a Time

A prayer for 2024

If ever there was a time,
for truth to vanquish lies,
for honor to remember sacrifice,
for hate to be soothed by forgiveness,
It is - today, tomorrow, and forever.

If ever there was a day,
to begin the march for fairness,
to open a door to kindness,
to reach across the abyss,
It is - now, again, and always.

If ever there was a season,
to hold someone in the grip of sorrow,
to erase loneliness with presence,
to give your joy with passion,
It is - urgent, needed, and required.

If ever there was a clarion call,
for decency to endure smugness,
for patience to outpace disappointment,
for jealousy to surrender to acceptance,
It is heard - every morning, noon, and night.

If ever in the cycle of life,
you calm a crying child,
you give hope to a lost soul,
you give shelter to the outcast,
You will find - richness in youth, adulthood, and old age.

If ever there was a reason,
for injury to find reconciliation,
for prejudice to find enlightenment,
for charity to become contagious,
Let it begin with - ourselves, and our children, to become our legacy.

If ever there was a time,
to bring forth our better angels,
to manifest the cooling rains of justice,
to quench the desert of our hearts,
Pray that it is - soon, frequent, and everlasting.

If ever there was a shining moment,
for modesty to overcome vanity,
for gratitude to temper greed,
for clarity to conquer chaos,
and for comradery to abate fear.
Let us transform the precious moments of our lives -
With the power of love, empathy, and cheer.

In the Spirit of renewal and rebirth of Spring and the Easter season, our thoughts turn to hope, new beginnings and joy. In a broader sense, we, our families, our communities, our nation and the world need renewal, rebirth and an infusion of hope.

With war, famine, fascism, intolerance and injustice on the rise, we must renew the bonds that bind us. Human rights, human dignity, democratic social bonds and environmental justice need our prayers, attention and actions.
