LAKE ARIEL, PA — Join Lacawac Sanctuary and the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society’s naturalists for a morning of bird watching (and listening) followed a royal breakfast on Saturday, May 23 from 8 to 11 a.m. Breakfast will be in the historic Watres Lodge dining room. This national historic landmark was originally built in 1903 by William Connell for himself and his hunting friends. Today, this lodge is used by higher-education science research classes and professors to study everything from seasonal changes to the diversity of the plants and animals living on the 550 acre nature preserve.
The sanctuary’s partners from the NEPA chapter of the Audubon Society will lead small groups onto the trails of the preserve looking and listening for a diverse population of avian species. Our observations will be recorded on eBirds, an online citizen science database used by scientists and researchers. Bring binoculars and field guides, if you have them. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and water bottles are suggested. After the survey, participants will meet in the lodge for a rewarding breakfast cooked by volunteers.
Registration and a donation of $15 can be made with Lacawac Sanctuary by calling 570/689-9494 or emailing info@Lacawac.org. Include your name, email address and how many seats to reserve. Lacawac Sanctuary is a natural wetland in near-pristine condition and a rich, second-growth forest canopy. The members’ rate for this event is $10 per person. For more information about other programs and events, visit www.lacawac.org or www.nepaaudubon.org. A visit to Lacawac Sanctuary proves what natural magic protected lands possess.
