Fifty-five dogs taken from Waymart Home

The owner of 55 dogs that were removed from a house on Belmont Turnpike in Waymart will likely face charges for animal cruelty. Ten of the dogs in his care were dead or dying when officials entered the home; the owner, who was not named in news reports, could also be facing a charge of operating a kennel without a license.

A neighbor called officials on September 8, after hearing barking inside the home.

Debbie Moore, the manager at Dessin Animal Shelter in Honesdale, said the situation got out of control for the owner, and there were dogs that had recently given birth to litters and a couple that looked pregnant.

She said the dogs had quite a few medical problems, including skin issues and eye conditions, and most of them were quite thin.

She said some of the nursing mothers have been fostered out, but most of the dogs are not now in a position to be adopted by would-be pet owners. She said, “They don’t walk on a leash, they’re not house broken and they never left the inside of the house or garage where they were located, so right now they are shy and scared.”

She said, however, if there are people out there who think they would like to eventually adopt one of the dogs, they should contact the shelter at 570/253-4037, or visit the website at www.dessinshelter.com.

Additionally, the shelter is seeking donations to help purchase the necessary supplies to help deal with the large number of dogs and their health needs.
