Berlin Township has bought a 2012 Ford 550 truck for $69,658. The purchase was made through Pennsylvania’s piggyback program, which allows municipalities to benefit from cooperative purchasing through the Commonwealth’s Department of General Services’ commodity contracts. Utilization of state-awarded contracts by local governments fulfills local bidding requirements and increases savings to the municipalities.

“It’s a great savings for the taxpayers,” board of supervisors’ chairman Paul Henry said at the February 19 meeting, though it was unclear how much money the township saved.

The acquisition is being financed through the Dime Bank for four years. The township also is using $3,500 from its machinery account toward the purchase.

The truck will be used for maintaining roads, plowing snow and cindering. In the summer, it can be used to carry sluice pipes and other equipment. The township now has four trucks.

In other business, the supervisors accepted the resignations of auditors Nancy R. Eisele and Arlene Avery. Replacing them will be Linda Kelly and Patricia Hanley, said supervisor/secretary Cathy Hunt.

The supervisors also are looking for candidates to fill a position with the township planning commission. Anyone interested may contact the township at 570/729-8073.

Welcome Lake Fire Chief Craig Case asked supervisors if his department could withdraw money from the township’s fire tax account in order to make truck payments. The account helps fund the Welcome Lake and Berlin Township fire companies. The supervisors consented to the request.
