Wayne County funds ag land project

The Wayne County commissioners allocated $86,958 for the Agriculture Land Preservation program in 2013. The purpose of the program is to keep land for agriculture use, not allowing it to be used for development.

Wayne County was one of the first counties in the state to promote such a program in 1989. According to the county website, “The objective of the nine-member Agricultural Land Preservation Board is to protect the viable agricultural land in the county by purchasing conservation easements which prevent the development or improvement of the land for purposes other than agricultural production and related activities.”

Regulations prohibit subdivision of existing easements, except for the subdivision of no more than two acres for the construction of one additional residence and only if the construction cannot be accomplished without subdivision.

Since 1989, Wayne County has acquired over 30 easements, permanently preserving more than 4,300 acres of farmland.
