Dessin receives 12 dogs from Benton hoarder case

July 25, 2012

HONESDALE, PA — More than 200 Chihuahuas removed from the home of Albert and Thomas Ambrosia on Ridge Road in Jackson Township, Columbia County, PA on July 19 are being transported to shelters across the state in order to find new homes for the small dogs. Twelve of the dogs are now at Dessin Animal Shelter being cleaned up and cared for in preparation for adoption.
In what may be one of the largest cases of dog hoarding in Pennsylvania, dog wardens and state troopers searched the two-story home near Benton and found 206 live dogs. The dogs were initially placed in crates and taken to the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg where they were evaluated by veterinarians who identified problems primarily associated with the eyes, skin and teeth.

Approximately 30 frozen dead dogs were also found and reported to be awaiting cremation. Authorities have not yet determined what charges may be filed.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture maintains a confidential toll-free tip line to report unsatisfactory or illegal kennels at 877/DOG-TIP1. For more information regarding the Dessin dogs or to make a donation in support of their care, contact the shelter at 570/253-4037.
