Walden man arrested for 50 bags of heroin

NY State Police in Middletown announce the arrest of Walter Herring, age 34, of Walden, New York. Herring was stopped by troopers from the Middletown barracks on Friday, February 5, 2016 at approximately 2:30 PM for a traffic infraction on State Route 211 East in the Town of Wallkill.

Herring was found in possession of 50 bags of heroin, crack cocaine, and a small quantity of marihuana. During the traffic stop, Herring swallowed a bag of cocaine in an attempt to hide it from troopers. He was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center and admitted for possible cocaine poisoning.

Herring was charged with tampering with physical evidence, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, and unlawful possession of marihuana.

He was arraigned at the medical center by Town of Wallkill Justice Joseph Owen, and committed to the custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office without bail. Subsequent to the arrest, troopers and Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives executed a search warrant on Herring’s residence, a mobile home in the Town of Montgomery. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered, along with more cocaine and marihuana, and over $11,500 in US currency. The handgun had been reported stolen to Middletown Police 2014. Herring will be charged at a later date with criminal possession of a weapon and possession of stolen property.
