Storm cleanup still underway

REGION — Our area was hit hard by snow storm Stella, dumping around 20 to 30 inches. According to weather.com, the highest snow total in New York is 42 inches in West Winfield, and in Pennsylvania 34.5 inches in Oakland. Schools in New York and Pennsylvania have been closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and PA school systems Delaware Valley, Wayne Highlands, Wallenpaupack Area and Western Wayne are even closed today, Thursday. Major cleanup is still going on. Many back roads need to be cleared, while most major roadways are clear. Many people spent the past two days digging out their driveways and cars, and some still need to be shoveled out.

Here in Narrowsburg, the highway crews are plowing the roads, and Main Street shopowners are shoveling the sidewalks.

In Wayne County, travel bans are still in place. Honesdale Borough has extended its travel and parking ban for one more day. Therefore, travel on borough streets will be restricted to emergency vehicles and essential personnel and all other essential personnel. All non-essential travelers are requested to stay off the roadways until 8 AM Friday, March 17, 2017, to allow for safe snow removal from the roadways.

The storm prompted Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency on Tuesday for all of New York's 62 counties, including New York City. He also directed non-essential state employees to stay home from work, reports the AP.

Wednesday he announced that he is sending 100 large plows and 100 members of the National Guard to assist in snow removal in the state's southern tier region.
