More clean up, operations center closes

REGION — Cable television and phone company crews were active in the region as recovery from storms Riley and Quinn were still underway on March 12.

Sullivan County Public Safety Commissioner Rick Sauer announced the closure of the Emergency Operations Center on March 9 at 5  p.m., “to allow members that have been staffing the EOC, some of whom still don’t have power at their houses, to tend to their families and needs.”

Now that some portions of the affected areas have power restored, communication companies (Spectrum, Frontier and Verizon) are working as well to restore their services.

As of the morning of March 12, NYSEG announced it has restored “power to nearly all of the more than 203,000 customers that were impacted” by the two storms; however there were still a few scattered outages in the Towns of Highland and Bethel.

Orange and Rockland Utilities reported 13 remaining outages in the towns of Highland and Forestburgh.

Across the river in Pennsylvania, PPL said that there were just three outages remaining in Pike County by the afternoon of March 12, and none remaining in Wayne County.  The utility reported some 239,000 customers without power across its entire territory at the height of the outages, with more than 1,800 linemen, tree crews and damage assessors deployed to the task of restoration at the peak.
