Hawley Council tackles diverse agenda

HAWLEY, PA — The agenda was varied, but much work was accomplished at the March 14 Borough Council meeting.

A violation notice will be issued to the owner of 401 Hudson St. for failure to register a rental property with the borough. One of the tenants at the property was counseled that she had grounds to break the lease under the Pennsylvania Landlord-Tenant Act due to the lack of major repairs at the property.

The Sewer Authority issued 21 notices of delinquent accounts. Shut-offs for non-payment will commence on April 1.

As part of the fire department report, Gene Krause stated that a business selling propane tanks is operating from a residential site at 812 Church St. Zoning Code Officer P.J. Dougherty was apprised of the situation.

Michele Rojas was authorized to sign paperwork on behalf of the borough for the grant money to be provided by PennVest. The settlement date is April 19. The contract with Maiocco Excavating Company from Lake Ariel will become effective on April 20, with materials to be ordered soon thereafter. Work on culvert repairs related to the levee is expected to begin in June or July and will be continuous from the date it begins, with delays due only to weather. The work must be complete by October 30. Maiocco has agreed to hold all costs as per contract with the exception of materials costs.

Following up on discussions from the prior month, the council decided to contract for levee insurance with a municipal insurance trust rather than its current provider. The new agreement will take effect on April 1 and will save thousands of dollars.

Space in the community garden will be available for $35 per plot. The garden is located at the Hawley Library. Applications for a plot can be made at the borough office. Space is limited.

Police Chief Daniel Drake announced that a mobile radar display was procured. It will be located at various areas as needed around the borough. Penny Lane Candies donated $100 to the Police Department.

The annual Easter egg hunt will take place at 10 a.m. on March 31 in Bingham Park, accommodating various age groups up to age 10. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at the firehouse.
