Statement from the executive committee of the WJFF Board of Trustees

Posted

WJFF’s Board of Trustees would like to assure everyone—our listeners, our volunteers and our staff—that we have heard fully and clearly the comments from those attending our meeting on Wednesday, March 20. Several issues were raised during the meeting and the board intends to address them all.

Some people at the meeting were upset that a locally produced program was temporarily put on hiatus by WJFF’s Program Committee (PC). The PC—all WJFF volunteers—gave the producers several reasons, but the proximate cause was the broadcast of obscene language prohibited by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). We value our volunteers in general and the producers of this program in particular, but our first responsibility is to our community of listeners.

WJFF’s board would also like to state that it takes its responsibility to all legal authorities—including the FCC and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—extremely seriously, and believes WJFF to be in complete compliance with these agencies. We will conduct a thorough review of these requirements.

Like the people whose voices our listeners know and love on our airwaves, WJFF’s trustees are volunteers. Because of previously scheduled work obligations and travel, we have not yet even had a chance to meet. After much consultation, we have determined the earliest the board will be able to gather in full is Wednesday, April 10.

We ask for the patience and forbearance of all concerned until that date. We recognize the urgent importance of discussing and addressing the concerns that have been voiced, and promise a comprehensive response and a plan for further dialogue with all parties.

Thank you.
