Two causes for celebration

July 19, 2012

For 20 years I’ve enjoyed the Narrowsburg fireworks as much as anyone. It was back in 1776 that John Adams suggested such a day be celebrated “with pomp, parade...and Illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other...”

This morning, walking a dirt road beside Calkins Creek I looked up to see an eagle flash its tail as it rounded a bend ahead of me – another a cause for celebration, especially in 2012, as billions of humans, many impoverished and malnourished, crowd and stress our small planet.

With careful thought and goodwill, I hope that Narrowsburg and the Upper Delaware community will consider celebrating July 4 as a special “Day of Deliverance” (John Adams phrase in 1776) for ourselves and for the creatures that enjoy our protection.
