Harris man arrested for gun, stolen property

Posted

On Thursday April 18, 2013, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office executed a “no knock” search warrant at 25 Pine Street in the Village of Monticello. The search warrant was obtained as a result of an ongoing investigation into the numerous burglaries that have taken place in Sullivan County.

At approximately 8:30 PM, the Sheriff’s Emergency Services Unit entered and secured the residence where deputies recovered a shotgun, 2 rifles, and 4 handguns.

The shotgun was immediately identified as the one stolen from a house on Harris Road in the Town of Thompson on Thursday April 11. Deputies also recovered jewelry, marijuana, and prescription pain killers.

Abdoor Persaud, 59, who resides at the residence, was taken into custody and charged with the Felonies of Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. He was arraigned before Town of Thompson Judge Martin Miller and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

“It appears that Mr. Persaud was running a large “fencing operation” dealing in property taken in area burglaries”, said Sheriff Mike Schiff. “We are glad that we recovered several stolen firearms before they ended up in the wrong hands”.

Schiff says that his deputies are examining other property that was found at the suspect’s residence to determine its origin. “The investigation is far from over”, said the Sheriff who believes additional charges are pending. The Monticello Police assisted deputies at the scene and were able to make several arrests for loitering.
