Monticello man convicted again as head of huge drug conspiracy

District Attorney Jim Farrell announced that Adam Bloom, age 29, of Monticello, N.Y., was sentenced to an aggregate 19 years in state prison and 5 years of post release supervision for his role as the head of a large scale drug conspiracy in Sullivan County by County Judge Michael McGuire.

Bloom had been arrested in May of 2008 after a long term investigation into his drug dealing by the New York State Police, Monticello Police , Liberty Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office. Bloom previously admitted to conspiring with eleven other individuals to distribute large quantities of cocaine in Sullivan County.

He also admitted on six different occasions to the possession of more than 8 ounces of cocaine in furtherance of his drug distribution ring and to laundering $7,500 in cash, proceeds of his illegal narcotics operation.

Police and prosecutors used a wiretap to gather evidence and take down the large scale cocaine conspiracy ring, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of over twenty-five individuals.

Farrell said Bloom had previously pled guilty in December of 2008 and had received a sentence of 36 years in state prison but that plea and sentence was thrown out by the Appellate Division Third Department in May of 2011 because they found the plea was not properly taken by County Judge Frank LaBuda who failed to advise Bloom of a period of post release supervision he would serve after his prison sentence was completed.

Bloom’s original plea agreement called for a 12 year prison sentence with cooperation against the other conspirators but he failed to cooperate and the sentence was increased as a result.

LaBuda recused himself from the case after it was returned to Sullivan County Court after being asked by Bloom’s attorney.

Bloom was sentenced as follows on each of his guilty pleas:

Conspiracy in the Second Degree, a class B felony, 5 to 10 years in state prison; Six counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 1st Degree, class A-1 felonies, 19 years in state prison and 5 years post release supervision; and Money Laundering in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony, 2 to 4 years in state prison.

All sentences were run concurrently for a total sentence of 19 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision. Bloom was also ordered to forfeit nearly $5,000.00 in cash and a Breitling watch, all proceeds of his drug dealing, to the District Attorney.

Bloom was sentenced as a second felony offender having prior felony convictions for Driving While Intoxicated in 2007 in Queens County, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree, a class B felony, for which he received a sentence of 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison in 2002 in Sullivan County.

Farrell said, “Bloom was the head of the largest drug conspiracy that this county has seen, he distributed extremely large quantities of cocaine and ruined countless lives by his actions and today he was held accountable. The sentence here recognizes the seriousness of his criminal actions and I believe serves the interests of this community.”
