The big news of the last two weeks was the snow, with over seven inches in the first round, followed a few days later by another five. Was this pay back for the mild winter of last year? Who knows? In any case, much of it has melted with the unusually warm temperatures of the weekend. The important thing is that local events still were held when conditions permitted.

The elementary school winter concert was a delight, with the band and choral group entertaining with holiday music that left you in the spirit of the season. Hint: It’s important to purchase the homemade cookies at intermission, otherwise they are all gone at the end of the performance.

Another event, well attended, was the reading of the very, humorous play, “The Butterfingers Angel, Mary & Joseph, Herod the Nut,” at Gerard’s River Grill on Friday night, the 13th. It was especially wonderful to see our local residents be the readers and make us laugh, while learning of another side of the Christmas story. (Well, not really another side— just a maybe—but lots of laughs.

The other event that continued without a problem was the celebration for Vera B. Williams. Her book, a “Chair for My Mother,” was recognized as one of the “100 best children’s books in the last 100 years.” At the reception, Vera took time to address the guests that came to honor her and gave us insight into the art of writing and illustrating children’s books.

Most inspiring, is to learn that Vera did not start her very successful career until she was well into her 40s. Never think you are too old to start a fresh path.

With that thought, I will leave you to make all those New Year’s resolutions. Happy New Year to all.
