Summer programs expose youth to the performing arts
July 2, 2014 —
BETHEL, NY — This summer, Bethel Woods performing arts workshops, Summer Stages, will return with programs expanded to serve a variety of interests and age levels. Summer Stages consists of a series of workshops for youth participants that explore every facet of the performing arts, ranging from behind-the-scenes activities to live performance. Topics explored include musical theater (Broadway in Bethel), jazz (All that Jazz), and opera (Youth Opera Experience). Each of these individual workshops culminates in a final public performance wherein participants have the opportunity to showcase their talents to a live audience.
Each Summer Stages workshop will last between two and three weeks. Interested participants can choose from the following tracts:
Broadway in Bethel is a theatre-based workshop for teens in grades 7-12. Participants will engage in rehearsing, designing, and performing the ‘60s rock musical Godspell. The program will kick off with a Meet and Greet Reception on Sunday, July 6 and will end with a final performance, open to the public, on Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. in the Bethel Woods Event Gallery.
All that Jazz provides an immersive experience in music for young vocalists and instrumentalists in grades 6-12. Beginning on Sunday, July 27 and concluding, with a public performance, on August 9, All that Jazz provides an opportunity for budding musicians to fine tune their skills and delve into a variety of musical styles.
Youth Opera Experience gives young people in grades 2-6 the opportunity to rehearse, design, and perform the opera pastiche, “Rumpelstiltskin.” Beginning on Sunday, August 10 and concluding with a public performance on Saturday, August 23, this program will also include acting games, arts and crafts, and a songwriting workshop with an opera professional.
First Bows, a new week-long, half-day program for little ones, aged 4 to 6, will explore a variety of performing and visual arts through special activities, games and other creative projects. The program will run from August 25 to 29.
In order to ensure a wide-variety of access to the arts, some scholarships are available to these programs. Transportation from multiple locations in Orange and Sullivan counties is also being considered.
