HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — NACL will present an afternoon of family theatre, music, workshops, demonstrations and displays that celebrate art, ecology and sustainability on Sunday, August 19 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. The day features the work of many community groups, environmental organizations, farmers and individuals working to develop sustainable and ecologically progressive communities and projects.

The day will start at with a potluck lunch, accompanied by live music with Sean Zigmund and friends, Korean drumming and a short performance by Seon Wellbeing Academy. Participants are encouraged to bring food to share.

At 1:30 p.m., revel in a family comedy feature performance of Urbano’s Circus, by Richard Grunn with Sheridan Grunn. The performance is a fusion of commedia dell’ arte and puppetry. The show opens in an Italian restaurant where Urbano is frantically trying to deliver food orders. In his efforts, the food flies off the plates and is then placed in the lap of an audience member, but the food is not real food—it is made out of yarn, garbage bags, and many other found and recycled objects.

At 2:30 p.m., a number of workshops will be held at the theatre and artists’ residence along with ongoing demonstrations. They will include rain barrel painting by the Delaware Highlands Conservancy, food preservation by Maria Grimaldi and Seon Wellbeing Academy Timber Frame Building by American Joinery/George Whitehouse, hoop house building by Root ‘n Roost Farm, pie-making by Eleanor Blakeslee, Silk-Screening by theYouth Economic Group, “My Energy Plan” by the Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development and face painting by Tara Backlund.

In addition there will be demonstrations and displays by, among others, Shop Local Save Land, Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, The Dirt Diva, SkyDog Farm and The Solution Project.

At 4 p.m., sign up for the second annual Lettuce Eating Contest, followed by puppet parade, and music and song to close the day.
