‘Wood Winds’

BARRYVILLE, NY — On Saturday, January 30, an opening reception for ‘Wood Winds’ at Nonneta and Friends Creative Gallery will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. The show, on display until Sunday, February 28, features two artists, Alexandra Climent and Kristin Texeira.

While working in different mediums, Climent with wood and Texeira with oil paints, the theme of music traces through some of their works. The title of the show, “Wood Winds,” references the family of musical instruments and is also a nod to Climent’s medium and both artists’ surrounding environment of Delaware River Valley and its forests.

‘Art and Activism: Taking it to the Streets’

ONLINE — Chronogram magazine has announced a virtual conversation on Wednesday, January 27 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with Jack Shainman, Tschabalala Self, Melissa Auf der Maur, Matt Dilling and Ama Josephine B. Johnstone to discuss art and activism and to answer these questions: How do we move activist art out of galleries and into public space, and conversely, how do we bring new audiences into the galleries? Chronogram editor Brian K. Mahoney will moderate the conversation.

Activist art is meant to question the status quo, deepen understanding and inspire action. Themes of social justice, racism, human rights, inequity and the degradation of our environment (among others) can be communicated through the visual arts in ways where other media fail.

The event will consist of a moderated discussion with the panelists followed by a Q&A with the audience.
