Regina McKenny-Snead recipient of Fallsburg Alumni Association’s Lawrence Kotin Award

FALLSBURG, NY — The Fallsburg Alumni Association presented its first-ever Lawrence Kotin Award. This award recognizes and honors a Fallsburg Alumni whose dedication and contributions on behalf of children with special needs is outstanding.

Lawrence Kotin graduated from Fallsburg Central High School in 1958. He drafted much of the Massachusetts legislation outlining the rights of children with disabilities and was instrumental in its passage in 1972. He later drafted the regulations from that statute and was a consultant to the Department of Education in the first years of the law’s implementation. This legislation became the federal Education for All Handicapped Children Act three years later. 

The Fallsburg Alumni Association has chosen Regina McKenny-Snead to be the recipient of this honor and award. Regina is a 1989 graduate of Fallsburg Central School District. She has dedicated most of her career to SullivanArc and was promoted into her current position as associate executive director of SullivanArc in 2007.

Rotary’s Million Mask Challenge, take two

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — This January, Rotary’s Ted Rossi secured 8 million PPE masks to distribute throughout Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New York. This venture was Rotary’s Million Mask Challenge, take two.

Under the direction of Rotary District 7210, district governor Anthony Marmo, along with assistant district governor Jacob Lerner, acquired 175,000 masks of those 8 million for our district.

Liberty Rotary, Livingston Manor and Monticello Rotary clubs received 14,000 masks combined. Masks were distributed throughout Sullivan County as part of this humanitarian mission.

During the week of January 18, Monticello Rotary Club President Todd Grodin donated to Monticello Central District (750 adult and 250 child masks), Rock Hill Fire Department (250 adult and 30 KN95 masks), Monticello Fire Department (250 adult and 30 KN95 masks), Monticello Police Department (90 KN95 masks), Rock Hill’s Sullivan County SPCA (250 adult masks) and Sullivan County’s Literacy’s Volunteers (250 adult masks).

On-site workplace COVID-19 testing

HONESDALE, PA — Lake Region Urgent Care (LRUC) & Occupational Medicine, part of Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers (WMCHC), is offering local businesses a service to help manage their response to employee COVID-19 exposures.

The program, implemented through the occupational medicine side of the practice, includes on-site COVID testing, result tracking and guidance on the quarantine process. 

Response time to set up testing, which will be conducted at the workplace for employee convenience, ranges from same day to within 24, 48 or 72 hours following initial contact with LRUC. While the cost of a COVID-19 test itself is covered through government funding in most cases, WMCHC charges administrative fees based on the type of test administered, number of employees tested and service response time.

WJFF strategic planning community meeting

ONLINE — WJFF Radio Catskill is requesting public input into the development of the community radio station’s 2022 through 2026 Strategic Plan. The document will put forward the station’s priorities and plans for the next five years.

“Our first step is to review, and possibly update, our mission, vision and values,” says Clay Smith, member of the Board of Trustees who is heading up the planning process. “Involving our volunteers, members, and listeners is vital to the success of our effort.”

The public is invited to join members of WJFF’s Board of Trustees for a remote community meeting on Tuesday, March 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. for a discussion. Interested individuals can join by Zoom or phone.  Advance registration is required.

Wayne County Republican Committee meet and greet

WAYMART, PA — The Wayne County Republican Committee invites the public to a meet and greet candidate night on Saturday, February 27 at Ladore Performing Arts & Recreation Center (PARC) Pavilion, located at 287 Owego Tpk. The event is a bipartisan meet the candidates and petition signing event for local and state candidates running on the ballot in the May 18 primary election. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. 

There is a 200-seating limit. Light refreshments will be served. The evening will also be live-streamed on the committee’s Facebook page, Wayne County PA Republican Committee. The event video will be available at a later date on the Wayne County Republican Committee website.

COVID-19 guidelines will be followed, including the wearing of masks. Hand sanitizer will be available.

Public Health, NYU collaborate on diabetes survey

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan County Public Health Services and the NYU School of Medicine have partnered to perform a health survey sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to better understand the health and dietary patterns of residents in Sullivan County and the prevalence of diabetes. The project is titled “The Impact of the Food Environment and Other Environmental Exposures on the Risk of Diabetes in Rural Settings.”

Households will be randomly chosen to participate in this health survey, which is voluntary; responses will be kept confidential. Should your household receive this survey, be assured it is legitimate. You must be a Sullivan County resident to be eligible. Only one adult from your household to answer the survey.
