HONESDALE, PA — Three years after a fire destroyed the Taco Bell near the Route 6 mall, the community has an idea of what will come in to replace it.
Weis Markets, which has a supermarket in the same mall complex, plans to redevelop the space as an eight-bay fuel island.
Greg Holtzman, a project manager with the engineering firm BL Companies, presented the "great little redevelopment project" to the Texas Township Planning Committee on Monday, September 23.
Holtzman said the project will include underground tanks, and that the lot will be raised so it will be safely outside the floodplain. The project will also reduce the amount of impervious surface where the Taco Bell used to stand, he said.
"I knew something would come along here eventually," said Planning Committee member Clyde Kreider.
The Planning Committee asked Holtzman about traffic flows at the site. "I personally think it should be one way in and one way out," said Planning Committee member Lillian Rothrock, saying that traffic pulling out of the Weis parking lot sometimes was a "nightmare."
Holtzman said the project team did look at different traffic setups, but that it prioritized having vehicles be able to move around inside the site without having to go out and back in while looking for open pumps.
The Planning Committee agreed to send the plans to Wayne County for review. The plans will then return to the Planning Committee, before going to the Texas Township Board of Supervisors for a final review.
