Wayne County honors its heroes

HONESDALE, PA — Anyone who has driven through downtown Honesdale recently has likely seen what’s different: The streets are now lined with banners of the community’s military veterans who were honorably discharged, currently serving or killed in action.

“It’s a lot easier today because we have a truck,” Kim Erickson said over the weekend. The prior week, Erickson and Jeff Hiller had walked through town with a big ladder and worked through poor weather conditions, technical difficulties and fleeting daylight. Traveling on foot and working by hand, it took the two of them three days to complete the banners on Church Street.

Since then, the group has received assistance from Robert and Mary Robbins and from Heath and Jamie Crum of Crum’s Tree Service.

The project has been in the idea phase for years and is just now coming to fruition after finally getting past the “obstacles and red tape.” The group originally had planned on getting 92 banners up by Memorial Day weekend but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the banners, the group has also created booklets with stories about each of the 92 veterans and a map showing where to find their banner. Those who sponsored a banner will receive a free copy and remaining copies are for sale throughout Honesdale.
