Overdose awareness, Narcan giveaway at EPC

MILFORD, PA — The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Milford (EPC) and the Pike County Drug and Alcohol Commission will hold an overdose awareness event on Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the church’s front lawn.
Narcan will be handed out for free as well.
Many people have family members or friends affected by opioid addiction—or they know of someone. In too many cases, people die.
Narcan is a life-saving, non-addictive drug that reverses the effect of opioids. It is administered as a nasal spray, and it gives a person another chance at life.
Other resources and information for those seeking guidance and answers will be available.
If you or a loved one has or is struggling with addiction, the church and the commission want to meet you and provide you with available resources and Narcan. They can help you or your loved one get to the next powerful stage of your life.
The church is located at 300 Broad St.
For more information, call the church office at 570/296-4711.

Lucas Macdonough wins scholarship

HAWLEY, PA — Wallenpaupack Area High School student Lucas Macdonough has won the 2022 Lackawaxen River Conservancy (LRC) Scholarship.
He received his award at a ceremony on June 17.
Lucas will attend Penn State, where he will study materials science and engineering; his goal is to seek solutions to the problems that are plaguing agriculture and the environment.
Lucas is particularly concerned about the spotted lanternfly. “These invasive pests will harm and destroy our food sources,” he said.
If herbicides are used to kill the spotted lanternfly, those toxins also pose a danger to the honey bees and wasps that pollinate our blossoms, the LRC said.
Lucas grew up on a family farm, and last summer the family found two lanternflies on their property. This discovery made the danger clear. “The more we can spread awareness, the better chance we have to prevent this invasive species from destroying our environment and food sources,” he said.
The scholarship is open to graduating seniors attending high school in the Lackawaxen watershed, and who intend to pursue a career in environmental conservation. The eligible high schools are Honesdale High School, Wallenpaupack Area High School, Western Wayne High School and the Canaan Christian Academy.
The LRC is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the natural splendor of the Lackawaxen River, its watershed and wildlife. Learn more about it at lackawaxenriver.org.

Mental health hotline launched

NATIONWIDE — There’s a new phone number that could be as important to remember as 911. It’s 988.
“Every county in New York State, including Sullivan, will now offer this literal lifeline to crucial mental health crisis supports, including for those who are experiencing thoughts of suicide,” said John Liddle, Sullivan County’s commissioner of the division of health and human services. “Dialing those simple three digits will connect callers to a trained crisis counselor who can immediately address their needs, 24/7/365.”
Sullivan will work with Dutchess County, which hosts the call center, said community services director Melissa Stickle.
A call from Sullivan is coordinated with Sullivan’s emergency responders.
If there is a life-threatening emergency, people are still welcome to call 911, said public safety commissioner Tom Farney.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and its chat-based counterpart, www.988lifeline.org, will be able to:
Connect people to a trained counselor.
Reduce health care spending with more cost-effective early intervention.
Reduce use of law enforcement, public health and other safety resources.
Help end stigma toward those seeking or accessing mental healthcare.
