Sculpture highlights global warming

NARROWSBURG, NY — Artist and sculptor Naomi Teppich and writer Cass Collins—known as the River Muse for her long-running column in the River Reporter—have opened the ArtGarden on Collins’ family property in the Flats.
Teppich has installed her work, “Cactus Cocoon,” a large outdoor sculpture made of steel, colored cement and ornamental paint, in the art garden, which is located on Second Avenue.
The work is a commentary on global warming, Teppich wrote, that was conceived for and first shown indoors at the Catskill Art Society in 2012. Later it was shown at the Collaborative Concepts group outdoor sculpture show in Garrison, NY, as well as at other venues.
“Cactus Cocoon” will be on view as a loan through May 1, 2024.
Collins plans to offer the one-acre lot next to her home for juried sculpture displays.
Guests are welcome to visit the ArtGarden from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The address is 52 Second Ave.
For more information, email the ArtGarden at cassvcollins@gmail.com. Use ArtGarden as the subject line.

‘Heroines’ at NACL

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — The stories of Greek heroines could hold a message for modern women. Members of the box collective, a New York City-based group of performers, will explore what that means in September at the North American Cultural Laboratory.
The discussion takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 1.
The box collective uses burlesque to investigate the dynamics of sex, power and pleasure. “Heroines” will “excavate moments between the seams of the private and public persona, removing layers of the mask, and revealing what truth lies beneath,” the collective members said in a press release.
During their residency at NACL, three female theatre makers/performers—Sara Fay George, Andrea Goldman and Maria Menegaki—will be joined remotely by composer Dani Campos. They’ll create music and soundscapes to “support their exploration of where physical bodies meet the mythological body,” according to the press release.
The box collective was founded by and is run by women in New York City, with relationships and collaborations throughout Europe.

GlassRoots Fellowship exhibit at Peters Valley

LAYTON, NJ — The Peters Valley School of Craft has opened the GlassRoots Fellowship exhibition in the Sally D. Francisco Gallery.
It will be in place through Friday, September 23.
Now in its second year, the exhibition showcases a collaboration between GlassRoots and Peters Valley.
It follows the artistic development of seven young artists as they take intensive back-to-back workshops at the institutions. New work from last year’s cohort is also on display.
Participating artists include Deladin “Adem” Dag-Sosu, Giovanna Eley, Jose Angel Ruano, Karina Diaz, Neftali Granadas, Nathaly Tlaseca-Verde and Lasandra Wieters.
The artists, aged 18 to 24, spend five weeks learning glass techniques at the GlassRoots studios in Newark, and then they move to the Peters Valley campus for seven weeks of hands-on exploration and work.
Each fellow can choose to take a workshop every week, giving these emerging artists the opportunity to learn from and work alongside nationally recognized instructors in an immersive workshop environment.
The GlassRoots Fellowship exhibition features a variety of styles, techniques and materials across multiple media. Work ranges from glass, blacksmithing and jewelry to woodworking, printmaking and textiles.
Each year Peters Valley School of Craft invites over 150 artists to teach workshops in each of its studios—blacksmithing, ceramics, fibers (including surface design and weaving), fine metals and jewelry, woodworking and woodturning, photography and printmaking, plus special topics such as glasswork, painting, sculpture and more.

Choose your reality at the Milford Readers and Writers Festival

MILFORD, PA — The fifth annual Milford Readers and Writers Festival spotlights its science fiction—or speculative fiction—roots with a free panel titled “Choose Your Reality.”
The panel will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 in the Foundation Room at the Columns Museum.
Milford has ties to science fiction. It’s the original home of the Milford Writers Conference, which was designed to hone a writer’s skills. The conference was founded by such notables as Damon Knight, Kate Williams, Virginia Kidd and Judith Merrill.
Initially, the conference was held at Knight’s home, which became known as the Anchorage. Notable attendees included authors such as Kurt Vonnegut, Harlan Ellison, Gene Wolfe, Anne McCaffrey and Robert Silverberg.
When the Anchorage burned down in 1979, Arrowhead, the name given to the home of Virginia Kidd and James Blish, became the focal point for these and other writers of speculative fiction. Today, Arrowhead is the site of the Virginia Kidd Literary Agency, founded by Virginia, the first female literary agent in the genre.
The panel will be moderated by Karen Heuler, author of “The Splendid City.” Other authors are Alex Shvartsman, Claire Cooney, Nicholas Kaufman and Randee Dawn.
The panel will include a question-and-answer period.
The Columns is located at 608 Broad St.
Two additional events are planned on Saturday, letting readers meet and converse with these authors.
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. they will sell and sign their books at Golden Fish Gallery, 307 Broad St.
Beginning at 7 p.m., the authors will read their work in the Column Museum’s Foundation Room. Books and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.
The festival, which runs from Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18, aims to inspire and ignite conversations between people who love to read books and people who write them.
