‘The ingenuity in our world’

It is a troubled time. It is a time of chaos.

It is tempting to let the discord blind us to the transformation and renewal that is taking place while others despair. True leadership is found when a disruption in the daily fabric creates opportunities to build, create and attack those undone tasks that were waiting for the moment when we had a little more time.

I choose to take this moment to celebrate the ingenuity in our world. I cheer our neighbors and local businesses who won’t let the pandemic defeat them; they wear masks, reengineer their spaces to accommodate distancing and help us to regain normalcy while helping to defeat the virus.

For the four years I’ve lived in my current apartment, I’ve wondered how they could ever clean the exterior windows. They only open a few inches making it impossible to get to from the inside. The answer—rappelling! Our common spaces remain closed and we are required to wear masks in the common hallways, but our windows are sparkling!

I take inspiration from the small everyday gestures that we make to connect with each other. I will ignore the more boisterous attempts to divide us. Let’s change the conversation to building bridges rather than building walls.

ingenuity, leadership, rappelling, community
